The other advantage with the speed lace is that they don’t get untied by the undergrowth as you run or go crusty when mud gets dried into the lace. Hoka Speedgoat: The cushioning is a bit softer but, you lose the feel for the floor. So, the Speedgoat doesn’t feel as nimble as the Ribelle Run. The Speedgoat is a bit more bouncy in feel. Here is our Speedgoat review: https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/hoka-one-one-speedgoat-evo-review/

Both Mary and Bergen tested these shoes all over in the Colorado snow, both on maintained trails and off-trail. Wearing these comfortable, secure shoes before they needed to strap on skis or crampons was huge. That said, both gaiters offer excellent protection. The Cyklon sports a GORE-TEX gaiter and surrounding membrane, whereas the Kalibra utilizes Polartec Windbloc. Neither of them claims to be completely waterproof. But they both exceeded our testers’ expectations in both breathability and resistance to the elements.Another reason they feel a little larger is because of their wide fit, particularly across the forefoot. This is accompanied by quite a high volume around the midfoot. If you've historically had trouble finding shoes that fit your wide, chunky feet then these will potentially be the holy grail you've been looking for.

Fit: The shoe is built to wrap the foot with precision thanks to its reduced volume fit, perfect for this more technically oriented shoe. The heel is stabilized by an EVA band that completely wraps the shoe. Climbing inspired TPU rand encircles the perimeter of the shoe providing 360 degree support and protection. Inov-8 Terraultra G270: A rounded toe box but, not quite as roomy as the MTN Racer or Lone Peak. Grip is good on all but, the mud. A good responsive feel to the cushioning. Here is our review: https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/inov-8-terraultra-g-270-graphene-review-cushioned-ultramarathon-running-shoes/CLASS ACTION WAIVER: Any arbitration or proceeding shall be limited to the dispute between us and you individually. You've got to assume the GTX version weighs at least a little more than the unlined original, but I can't offer you direct comparison since Scrapa's weight figures online refer to different sizes. For the waterproof shoe they say 520g for a pair of size 38 (presumably this is the women's version since men's starts at 40 in the UK), while my much larger pair of size 47 weigh considerably more at 764g. Still I'd consider this midweight for a shoe, certainly not outrageous for a long day on your feet given the cushioning and support on offer (to say nothing of the waterproof membrane). Lightweight, breathable mesh with overlays of thermally welded PU film and translucent ripstop holds foot securely in place and provides support and protection. Topo MTN Racer 2: If you like a more rounded toe box. Then the MTN Racer 2 would be one to consider. Here is our review: https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/topo-athletic-mtn-racer-2-review/

Moving upward, both the men’s and women’s versions tighten using a BOA Fit System. BOA dials are often susceptible to snapping, so both of our testers instinctively approach them with caution. But Mary and Bergen both liked this one. It’s low profile and out of the way. Due to factories being closed because of Covid infection we had a longer 6 months to test run the shoes. That means we can write a bit more about the durability of the Ribelle Run. Scarpa’s ‘Ribelle’ is a range of footwear that is designed for the most technical mountain conditions. The Ribelle Run is the running shoe within that range and has been designed for fast running over technical terrain. In my opinion I found them to be a very versatile trail running shoe. They are not just a ‘race shoe’ and are comfortable to wear on a variety of terrains and distances. Fit is subjective, but Bergen wore the men’s version of these shoes around his house all day and then ran 9 miles in the afternoon the first day he had them. He experienced zero hotspots, no overheating, and no discomfort. The SCARPA Ribelle Run Kalibra G shoes impressed both Mary and him —even with the thin factory insoles. The diagonal zipper here is offset, and not resting directly on the bones on the top of your feet. The gaiter material is Polartec Windbloc, which promises a balance of water resistance and breathability. Both testers found that to be the case out on the trail.

As per the comments in Fit, I wasn't a fan of the speed lacing, but do like the traditional laces supplied. The former felt a little sharp, and I found myself wanting a little more precision, although a part of this potentially comes down to the fact I was having to over-tighten due to the sizing issue I was experiencing. Summary

Technical

Mary didn’t experience any wet feet during her testing of the SCARPA Kalibra G, either. So, while the holes under the BOA knobs look like exposed openings in the gaiters, they seem to seal up just fine during use. On a more practical level, the bonded uppers offer good abrasion resistance - exactly what you want for a technical shoe, which is destined to get a good scuffing. It also sheds mud pretty effectively, with very few seams that grains of grit can make their way into and work away at the weaknesses within. Altra Lone Peak: A more natural feel to the ride with a broad rounded toe box: https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/altra-lone-peak-5-review/ Fit: The shoe is built to wrap the foot with precision thanks to it’s reduced volume fit, perfect for this more technically oriented shoe. The heel is stabilized by an EVA band that completely wraps the shoe.
