About this deal

Massimo Osti was born and raised in Bologna, Italy. He became a graphic designer and worked in the advertising business. His career in the fashion industry began in the early 1970s, when he designed a T-shirt collection featuring placed prints. He was the first to use new techniques like the four-color process and silkscreen which are used for producing T-shirt. Following the success of this first T-shirt collection, he accepted the offer to design a complete Men's collection and became an equity partner in the company he would name 'Chester Perry' (later renamed the 'C.P. Company'). [3] 1980s [ edit ] C.P. Company is an Italian apparel brand founded in 1971 by designer Massimo Osti. [1] Initially called Chester Perry by the suggestion of his fashion entrepreneur friend Corrado Zannoni, its name was changed in 1978 following a lawsuit by Chester Barrie and Fred Perry, for the use of their first name and surname. [2] I’m a writer and brand consultant mainly working within a sphere of the industry that is centred around technical and performance-oriented clothing and footwear. My evolution into this space was largely informed by the work of Massimo Osti and his projects like C.P. Company, Left Hand and Levis ICD+ which all heavily influenced the way I look at garment technology. The era of design at C.P. Company that I’ve chosen to highlight is one of Moreno Ferrari’s lesser-known conceptions that was birthed during his tenure from 1997 until 2001: the Transformables diffusion line, an offshoot of C.P. Company’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection. Italian excellence: Emporio Armani and C.P. Company announce collaboration". wallpaper.com. 2021-12-16 . Retrieved 2023-08-09. Walling, J. (2005). Much of the C.P. Company’s clothing is based on military uniforms and work suits. Massimo Osti was renowned for his signature style, calling it a ‘hybridization of archival military, work, and sportswear models’. Using the finest Italian fabrics, Massimo Osti’s fashion house soon became infamous for its signature style and look. By 1987, Osti invented a variety of treatment methods that bolstered wool and flax with rubber to create waterproof foundations, and added sought-after levels of distress and feel to the garment’s bodies. In the same year, Osti invented ‘brushed wool’, a way of manipulating wool while keeping it breathable and insulating. Again, like garment dyeing, the practice is now an industry standard. It is also pertinent to note that sometime between 1998 and January of 2001 Philips’ had started referring to the BAN as Personal Area Network or (PAN), for the sake of this article it can be used interchangeably. New Nomads An exploration of wearable electronics by Philips. Rotterdam: 010 Publishers. p.22 By the mid-1970s, Osti began to move away from the graphics that defined his early work and towards an aesthetic that was very personal to him. As a collector of military surplus and vintage workwear, the former graphic designer became fascinated with the stories behind second-hand clothing and the personalities of the people who wore them –– it was this ‘worn-in’ look that he wanted to recreate in his own clothing. The fact that one of his first employees was a chemist (a move that was totally unusual for a clothing brand at the time) showcases how dedicated Osti was in chasing his vision. The discovery of garment dyeing – a process where whole garments composed of different fabrics and fibers are dyed in the same bath rather than constructed using individually pre-dyed and pre-cut fabrics – where each material reacts differently to the same dye getting interesting tone-on-tone color effects and broken-in textures were exactly what Massimo Osti was looking for. This technique revolutionized the industry not only because of its unique look and feel but also as it reduced wastage by eliminating leftover fabric.

He was one of the first to take screen printing to clothing and pioneered countless new innovations, ranging from garment dying to rubber wool. His work was aesthetic but above all, functional. Responding to Wang’s invitation, Osti explained his reservations, “I cannot come here to be my father’s son. If you have asked me for my name, I cannot accept.” Instead, Osti offered his services in marketing, building on the work he had done throughout his career. Wang accepted the offer and the partnership was born. “I felt I was there for my own contribution,” Osti says, “not just for my second name.” Created in 2000 thanks to a collaboration with Levi's, it offered a vast array of high performance technical outerwear. This collection was then supplemented by the ICD+ line which, thanks to an agreement with Philips, featured outwear garments which came equipped with a cell phone, mp3 player, and accompanying headphones and microphone which were all wired to the garment itself. In 1984, Osti sold his company shares to GFT (Gruppo Finanziario Tessile), but stayed on as the brand's stylist until 1994. [7] In 1993 the brand was acquired by Carlo Rivetti. Rivetti changed the name of the company from C.P. Company to Sportswear Company. In 2010 it was sold to Enzo Fusco's FGF Industry S.P.A.
