Description

It would also be helpful (in the opinion of an English teacher) to discuss the formatting for sentences and how the Chinese organize their sentences, early on in the book, rather than waiting until chapter 8 or so. Starting with HSK level 1, these textbooks gradually increase in difficulty, eventually leading to every Mandarin learner’s ultimate prize and the holy grail - HSK level 6 (which is the highest level and the closest you can get to becoming “fluent”). Versions in English (Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese), Spanish, German, French, and Russian are available. Other versions are in the process of publication.

The HSK series is a great place to start as they are based on the (only) official standardized proficiency tests for Mandarin Chinese in China. If you are a Chinese beginner looking for suitable Mandarin Chinese textbooks, I’d like to recommend one series to you, the New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook (1-6). This textbook is just the beginning of the series. You will have another five similar books to learn from. Thank you sooo much, I tried to find such book for a long time. By the way, could you please upload the mp3 of NRCR 4 workbook? Some topics in the textbooks are not related to the language of daily life in modern society, such as the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine.Level 2 books add an additional 150 unique characters to the Level 1 300 core character set. Each book is approximately 15,000 characters in length and offers a manageable increase in grammar and vocabulary used over the Level 1 books. Many learners who are able to read Level 2 readers with adequate speed and comprehension find they perform well on the HSK 4 and the AP Chinese Exam. To keep the dialogue the same, the characters are given universal names in translations of the book across all languages.

Firstly, they contain a nearly-complete system introducing Chinese grammar, which can help you in understanding some particularly difficult grammar points. The Practical Chinese Reader was the first set of dedicated textbooks on basic Chinese for use by foreign students of Chinese sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education, who commissioned three professors at Beijing Languages Institute (now Beijing Language and Culture University) to write it in the 1970s. It was praised by American and German academics in the early 1980s as practical and advanced. It also received a warm domestic welcome for its "meticulously planned" educational content and innovation in "using the communicative principle and strengthening cultural knowledge education", and won the second prize inaugural Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Award for Excellence. [2] New Practical Chinese Reader [ edit ] According to Mandarin Companion, graded readers are books or passages created specifically for foreign language learners that are written using carefully controlled words and grammar. Secondly, in Textbook 1, each new Chinese character is written out for you stroke by stroke. This is a very good way to remember those Chinese characters and practice writing Chinese. Cheng & Tsui is one of the most popular textbook series used in high schools and universities outside of China, especially in the United States.Breakthrough is Mandarin Companion’s entry level, designed specifically for emerging readers to master 150 unique characters. Each book is approximately 5,000 characters in length and uses simple vocabulary and grammar. Published by Beijing Language & Culture University Press, this series comes with the choice of traditional or simplified Chinese character versions. There are six volumes in total that effectively cover everything from HSK 1 to HSK 6.

The short answer is no! Textbooks can be a great tool to improve your Chinese, but they are no substitute for having real conversations with native speakers or listening to authentic Chinese language content such as Chinese songs or TV shows.

Level 1 includes 300 characters and adds an additional 150 unique characters onto the 150 characters from the Breakthrough level. Each book is approximately 10,000 characters in length and is written using carefully controlled vocabulary and grammar that is a small step up from the Breakthrough level. Used this book and its pairing Workbook in my online class by Confucius. Thanks to there being a teacher to supplement with information here and there, the whole class was able to go through the book and manage to get a lot out of it. This edition has some issues, like some outdated words and expressions, but it’s still used by classes since it’s much cheaper than the 3rd edition. I used this book to learn Chinese while in China. It was the first actual workbook I completed and I enjoyed the experience so much I told myself I would be conversational in mandarin. I'm not where I want to be yet but I do recommend this book. I found this book useful, but it is sometimes frustrating because the choices of vocabulary words to start out with aren't as helpful. I'd like to have learned more conversation phrases rather than discussing how busy I am.
