Description

Silvio Gazzaniga, an artist in Milan, sculpted the famed trophy in 1971, after Brazil were allowed to keep the previous trophy after winning the tournament three times. Following FIFA's decision to commission a new trophy ahead of the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, the story goes that they received 53 submissions for a new design. The lesser-known name of the tournament “The Football Association Challenge Cup” is hand engraved onto the front of the trophy.

French sculptor Abel Lafleur designed the Jules Rimet trophy in 1930. The trophy specifications and measurements were 14 inches (35 cm) in height and weighed 8.4 lbs (3.80 kgs). The famous prize was made of gold-plated sterling silver, and it had a blue base made of lapis lazuli stone. In 1954, the old base of the Jules Rimet Trophy was replaced with a taller one to accommodate names of more winners. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was never recovered and it was claimed that it had been melted down into gold bars. FIFA has framed new rules regarding the guardianship of the trophy. Unlike the Jules Rimet Trophy, the winning nations and future winners don’t get to hold the original trophy anymore. Instead, they are given a gold-plated bronze replica provided by FIFA. West Germany was the first nation to lift the modern World Cup trophy in 1974. FIFA World Cup Trophy Facts It has been named the Jules Rimet Trophy in honour of FIFA’s third president, who pioneered the first World Cup.

It took over 250 crafting hours for Thomas Lyte’s team of master craftsmen and women to complete the trophy. The FIFA World Cup trophy is 36.5 cm tall and is made of 6.175 kg of 18 karats (75%) gold. It has a circular base, 13 cm in diameter, made of two layers of malachite.

The floral designs on the FA Cup are grapes and vines. Details like this were created with a hammer and chisel using a process called chasing. Sculptors from seven countries sent in 53 submissions for the new design but eventually, it was commissioned to Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga. In 1970, following Brazil's then-record third tournament win which saw them claim the prize outright, the current version was commissioned. The only original piece of Abel Lafleur’s trophy in existence today is the original base, which was swapped out in 1954 for a taller one. The piece was discovered in 2015 stowed away in the basement of the FIFA headquarters in Zurich. FIFA World Cup trophy: 1974-presentThe good thing is they've upgraded the replica. That's a helluva lot better than the 1987 replica that was tiny and a bit average. This one is nice to have.

It was inspired by the Nike of Samothrace statue, an incomplete yet iconic Greek statue from the Hellenistic era which is on display at Paris’ Louvre museum. Despite suggestions to the contrary, there are also no plans yet to give an original cup to a team that wins the tournament three times.Instead, the FIFA World Cup winners from each year get to permanently keep a gold-plated bronze replica, referred to as the FIFA World Cup Winners’ Trophy, for every tournament they win. The current trophy was created for the 1999 championships and is the first permanent prize in the tournament's history. [8] The trophy was designed and produced in London by a team of craftsmen from Garrard & Co (the Crown Jewellers). The whole process was completed over a period of two months time.

The original base of the Jules Rimet Trophy, replaced before the 1954 World Cup, wasdiscovered by a FIFA staff memberat the organization’s headquarters in 2014. The 4-inch long base is on display at the World Football Museum in Zurich. The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first iteration. It was used from 1930 to 1970. Brazil won it outright courtesy of becoming the first country in the history of the competition to become three-time champions (1958, 1962 and 1970). The Reliance World Cup and Wills World Cup were crafted by Amit Pabu Wal of Jaipur who has also made the world's largest gold trophy, the most expensive trophy in world history, as well as the T20 World Cup. [10] Status [ edit ] The official line is that the World Cup trophy is solid, made up of 30,875 Carats of 18 karat (75%) gold with a band of malachite on its base. The weight of the FIFA World Cup trophy is 6.175kg. (13.61 pounds). The weight of the Jules Rimet trophy was 3.80 kilograms (8.38 pounds) Following the decision to swap the Jules Rimet Trophy with a new piece of silverware in the mid-1970s, the design and dimensions of the trophy underwent a slight change to make it bigger, and some would say better. It weighs in at 6.2kg (13.6lbs), compared to the 3.8kg (8.4lbs) of the of the Jules Rimet version — although the weight of it has actually been the subject of debate since it was commissioned, as fans speculate whether it is solid or, as some have claimed, hollow. What is the World Cup trophy made of and is it solid gold? Alongside a difference in its overall size and height, the modern FIFA World Cup trophy is also heavier than its predecessor was. World Rugby, attempting to provide some clarity, said the replica versions were "two-thirds the size" – though that's clearly not true of the 1987 version.
