I have re-read this book several times because of its brilliant reconstruction of some of the definitive events, which brought to an end the western Roman empire. There is nothing in the few sources that we have for the period that relates such a desperate struggle, although it could very well have happened, on a smaller scale. The things I learned from this book are astounding and mind boggling, and I would describe this book as one of the best of historical fiction. The stranger tells how his friend became the most decorated soldier in World War I and how one decision that he made during that war may have changed the course of history.

Based on a true story, it is set at the time of the Coventry blitz during the Second World War, but the real focus takes place in the First World War, when an act of mercy turns out to have unforeseen and disastrous consequences. Une leçon philosophique sur le libre-arbitre et les conséquences de nos choix que l’on n’a pas fini de méditer ! I first read this brilliant book in 1973, fittingly at Christmas and the New Year, which play such a tragic part of this fascinating story. But when he later recognises him as Hitler, Billy is haunted by his own kindness and attempts to change the course of history. I also think we could have had a brief description of the state of the empire and the Roman army at the time before we started for those not up to speed on this part of history. One of the reasons I liked this book so much is because it feels like someone is /telling/ you the story rather than you /reading/ it. He never said a word to us, hardly even acknowledged we were there, but took off his hat, put it up on the rack beside our suitcase, and then settled himself into the seat opposite.

In fact those who fought to stop the coalition of tribes from crossing and were only narrowly defeated were the "federate" Franks. Maximus, the legion’s commander, is urged to proclaim himself emperor, but he stands by his concept of duty and holds the frontier for longer than seems possible. It was an arrogant man trying to avoid the inevitable and totally wasting the lives of his men, surely he could see once the tribes had crossed the Rhine it was the beginning of the end for Roman Gaul. Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. In the year 406 Rome was on the defensive everywhere and a single Roman legion stood desperate guard on the Empire's Rhine frontier. Although it runs for well over 200 pages, this is a short novel and can be read quickly because of the font size and line spacing - it appears to have been aimed at children who would be reluctant to read. At the age of 18, Breem entered the Indian Army's Officers Training School, and in 1945 was commissioned as an officer of the Corps of Guides, an elite Cavalry detachment of the North West Frontier Force. To me this was a massive surprise and made me want to read the rest of the book to find out what happened.
