Queen: Queen Ruby (although some dragons still support Queen Scarlet, who may be alive and in hiding) Peacemaker will stay as Peacemaker forever, and will never find out about his past form as Darkstalker. [event 2] Are you sure about this?” asked the other soldier nervously. “They do look alike. But I would have guessed that the other one was Palm — I mean — it’s hard to tell — but —” I super loved Wren the rat, she is so cute and smart. I am definitely looking forward to seeing hopefully more of her story in the next book. And similarly, for all three of our heroes, given how it ends! The second instalment sees the 3 main characters continue their adventures and quests. This time we get to learn more about the hippogriff Barver and meet some new characters including toxic baby dragons, monster-puppies and pirate kings. Definitely a thrilling twist on a classic fairy tale with oodles of adventure, magic and friendship.

Beware the darkness of dragons, — Beware the darkness inside of dragons such as Darkstalker, Ex-Queen Scarlet, Sora, Icicle, and Flame. This could also be the huge 'darkness of dragons' flying over the sky to the lost city of night from the rainforest as described in the books. Based on the Pied Piper of Hamelin; this book, the first in a series; begins with Patch Brightwater, an apprentice Piper who tries to help a village overrun with rats but he does so by using a song that has been banned. Hope had stated that maybe Darkstalker's fate would have been different if she had chosen a name like Peacemaker from the beginning of his life. [2] With the help of Wren, a girl cursed to live as a rat, and Barver, a fire-breathing dracogriff, Patch must stop the Piper sparking the biggest battle of them all. Three accidental heroes versus one legendary villain… an epic adventure is born.On top of that the characters are quite easy to like. From the main trio to all the side characters, they are all unique and very vivid. I loved how they interacted with each other and how characters were not always as they were presented and therefore very surprising. For a middle grade they were quite layered even and complicated, with flaws and strengths and mistakes they make and learn from. It was playing with my emotions once again, but whereas the first one was mostly filled with frustration, this one was pretty emotional. A few times it left me feeling really sad and angry, unable to do anything. Helpless. A lot is revealed in this book about the state of affairs and how things were done. Some in power prey on the insecurities of the ones who make decisions and push for more radical solutions. All of this happens after a reader (old or young) is invested emotionally with the outcome for the creatures introduced to us, making it an apt tool for discussions to be had at a later stage as to the real-life implications of such situations. When Patch, a young Piper plays the forbidden 'dance' (banned since the manaical and now imprisoned Pied Piper of Hamelyn played it,) he finds himself in deep trouble. With the help of a cursed girl, Wren and a dracogriff, Barver, they set off on a multitude of adventures, unearthing dark secrets and facing a powerful enemy. Patch Brightwater is a boy in disgrace. Thrown in jail for playing a forbidden spell, he is no one’s idea of a hero. But then he discovers a deadly truth – the evil Piper of Hamelyn is on the loose.

She blinked and blinked again, trying to shake off the hallucination without moving. Her old boss had bee Despite being Qibli's grandfather, Vulture hates and haunts him. He hurt Qibli and made him doubt that everything was real. [31] Family Tree [ ] Personally, the book was a little on the young side for me. It felt very middle-grade in terms of character development and pace, and my preference is for at least young adult. Having said that, I would still be interested to read the next book in the series. She stole you away and brainwashed you. You haven't thought for yourself in years. You do exactly what she tells you to and think whatever she tells you to think. You're not your own dragon, Grandson. Everyone knows her group is basically a cult. It's true; ask anyone. Don't you want to think for yourself?" — Vulture to Qibli about Thorn, Darkness of Dragons The door of the hut opened, and a sharp-eyed dragon emerged, wiping her claws on a small, sandy, dark green towel. Desperate for food and shelter, Patch makes money by playing alluring and illegal flute songs. When he is caught and arrested, he is sure that he is doomed for a life in jail. In his despair, he meets an extraordinary talking rat who claims to be a girl cursed to live in a rat’s body. Patch vows to help her, and the two set off in search of a cure. The characters were all realistic. Some of them lied, made mistakes, but they all learn and grow and try to do better whenever they realise what they were doing. It is not done in a preachy way. After playing a forbidden spell-song to save a village from rats, 12-year-old piper Patch Brightwater is thrown in jail. But there he meets Wren – a noble girl under a rat-shaped curse – and together they befriend Barver, a fearsome dracogriff, and set off on a grand adventure filled with sorcerers, dragons, bandits…and one very deadly enemy.Peacemaker appeared in Moonwatcher's vision during the Battle of Jade Mountain. In the vision, Moon saw a little NightWing-RainWing hybrid growing up in the rainforest and having a peaceful life. The dragonet loved strawberries, and would eventually grow up and write the tribe-famous song " Strawberries as Big as a Scavenger's Head." Moon was confused about this vision as it did not fit at all with the fighting going on around her. Readers who enjoy Patch, Wren and Barver’s adventures will also enjoy Abi Elphinstone’s Rumblestar series and Michelle Harrison’s Widdershins Adventures. No, wait!” Palm floundered out of the pool and threw herself at her sister’s feet. “I was careful, I promise! I just need a place to hide for a few — even one day, just one day. Then I’ll keep running and you’ll never have to see me again, I swear.” Throughout the book, Qibli always had a suspicion that Vulture would end up working for Darkstalker and become a juggernaut, taking over the world. That suspicion proved to be true later when Vulture is seen in the lost city of night, bargaining with Darkstalker about their alliance.

Near the end of the book, when Darkstalker tried to convince Qibli to become an animus and work with him, he used his power to teleport Vulture in front of him. Darkstalker then enchanted Vulture many times, including to make him act like a hatchling, make him feel guilty for everything bad he had done, and make him be the best grandfather for Qibli. Darkstalker then made Vulture disappear. It is unknown what happened to him after that. You think the finale Battle is what will wrench your emotions? Well, not this book here. The incident in the middle was the most hurtful, to be honest. Not saying the finale wasn’t, but the middle really left me crying dry tears. All of the upper key stage 2 pupils who have read this book with me have thoroughly enjoyed it. I would highly recommend it to readers Year 6 and above but it would also make a fantastic class reader with upper KS2. Patch, our leading guys was wonderful. He always would put his best foot forward to help those around him and would go to any length to help his friends and it was delightful. And I can’t get over the friendship that he and Wren share, its sweet, innocent and I put want to put them in bubble wrap and protect them. Adorable! I was considering a three star review but I don’t know. I listened to the first book and followed along but it just felt as if as the story was being told, a more fanciful direction was imagined and with seemingly forced connection, the story takes on a different direction or new subplot. The thing about sequels is that, yes, we love to learn and read more about the world, live with the characters, experience both their happiness and sorrow, but often they disappoint. Not this book. It amazed me just as much as the first book, and I couldn’t put it aside. Disclaimer: An ARC was provided via USBorne YA in exchange for an honest review. The Thoughts, opinions & feelings expressed in the review are therefore, my own. And the twists and turns just kept coming; and I am so freaking excited to see where the author takes Patch and his friends to!
